Garage Door Restore

Background

Garage Door Restore Ltd has recently launched a lightweight, durable and easy to fit garage door ‘cover’, which simply fits over an existing door and immediately gives the appearance of a brand new door. This new product has many advantages over fitting a new replacement door, not least of which is a massive cost saving for the customer.  Fitting a brand new door needs to be undertaken by highly trained operatives and could take between 2 and 6 hours to fit, as problems can be encountered due to poor brickwork or timber frames. One person can easily fit the Garage Door Restore product within 30 minutes.

The idea came from Ron Benn (Managing Director) who had several years experience of working in the garage door replacement market, and thought that there must be an alternative to fitting replacement doors, as the costs were prohibitive and prevented many customers from replacing them until it was absolutely necessary. Ron decided to carry out some market research, which suggested 90% of the people with a garage door would like to replace them (even though they were in good working order) with a modern, maintenance free ‘makeover’ door, if the price was affordable to them.

Having designed his initial concept of a replacement ‘skin’ for a door, Ron spent over two years building prototypes and eventually developing an extremely lightweight and easy to fit replacement skin that would fit over the existing door. Early in 2009, Damian Webb (Business Development Director) teamed up Ron and his wife Kathryn (Sales Director) to form the management team and take the product to market. Damian had immediately seen the tremendous growth potential for the business, but realised that help would be required to maximise the opportunity and establish a sound business model from day one.

Support

Damian became aware of the High Growth Programme in April 2009 and quickly signed up to receive 5 days of coaching support, specifically focused on strategic planning and developing a licence model for the UK.  The support received included;

  • Development of a 3-year strategic plan using the Winning Pitch ‘visioning orbit’
  • Development of a 12-month action plan and individual, detailed process/activity plans
  • Mapping out a financial plan, including cash flow and forecasts for the recruitment of UK licensees
  • Detailing contractual and licensee agreements
  • Determining how to split geographical areas
  • Development of an initial marketing plan

Outcomes

  • Business model established and licensee training induction programme set up
  • In less than 12 months, 34 licensees have been established (with 3 more about to be appointed)
  • Excellent coverage in national press, Daily Mail, Daily Mirror and Mail on Sunday
  • 147,000 hits on the web site in one month! (November 2009)
  • On track for sales of £400k in first year (well ahead of initial forecasts)
  • Already added new products to the range, with further developments underway!
  • A new patented product has just been launched which is the only one of its type on the market; a high security, fully insulated (100% safe for consumer and environment) garage door which incorporates a maintenance free veneer panel
